On arrival you will be met by a representative of Magnifique Sri Lanka Holidays. From here you will be transferred to Colombo, where shopping and a city tour can be enjoyed in the afternoon.

Being the country’s commercial capital, Colombo is the largest city in Sri Lanka. It is a busy and vibrant city, with a mixture of modern life, colonial buildings and ruins. Some notable landmarks in Colombo include the two World Trade Centre towers – the tallest completed building in the country and the third tallest twin towers in South Asia, the Independence Hall at the Independence Square in Cinnamon Gardens – which was built for commemoration of the independence of Sri Lanka from the British rule, the Old Colombo Lighthouse – which was first constructed as a clock tower in 1860, the Jami Ul-Alfar Mosque – which was recognized as the landmark of Colombo by sailors approaching the port, and the Galle Face Green – the city’s largest and most elegant promenade.

Dinner and overnight stay: Trans Asia Hotel, Colombo – 5*.

Proceed to Kandy after breakfast. En route visit the Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage. Commence the city tour of Kandy in the afternoon, which includes the upper lake drive, the market square, the arts and crafts centre and the Royal Botanical Gardens in Peradeniya.

The Pinnawela Elephant Orphanage was established in 1975 to care for abandoned and wounded elephants. The orphanage is open to the public daily, and all admission fees are used to look after the elephants. Being the hill capital of the country, Kandy was declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1988. It is also the venue of the perahera and temples, shrines and monasteries are found everywhere, keeping Buddhist traditions alive. Visit the Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic in the afternoon, and later witness a cultural show. The Temple of the Sacred Tooth Relic, also known as the Dalada Maligawa, is a Buddhist temple in the city of Kandy and is located in the royal palace complex which houses the Relic of the tooth of Buddha, which is considered to be Sri Lanka’s most prized possession.

Dinner and overnight stay: Citadel Hotel, Kandy – 4*.

Visit the Royal Botanical Gardens at Peradeniya after breakfast. The Peradeniya Botanical Gardens cover over 60 hectares and are the largest botanic gardens in Sri Lanka.

Nuwara Eliya

The history of the gardens date back to as far as 1371 when King Wickramabahu III kept court at Peradeniya, near Mahaweli Ganga. The garden is home to over 300 varieties of orchids, spices, medicinal plants and palm trees. Thereafter leave for Nuwara Eliya, and en route visit a tea estate and factory. Nuwara Eliya offers breathtaking views of misty mountain peaks, verdant green valleys, flowery meadows and cascading waterfalls. It is blessed with pleasant mountain air and has a cool climate despite the county’s tropical weather. Being only 180 kilometres away from Colombo, Nuwara Eliya is also known as “Little England” since the British had once tried to turn this city into a typical English village.

Dinner and overnight stay: Galway Forest Lodge, Nuwara Eliya – 3*.
